Pen and Ink Concept

I drew this back in 2001, if I'm not mistaken.

It's one in a series of drawings for Bowling Gold, a cigarette brand for a proposed advertising campaign for them which didn't push through.

I made several concepts: bowling (of course), baseball, pool, and this one which is basketball. These drawings are made to give the client an idea of what the print ad is going to look at. Once they give the go signal that they like the concept, we take a photographer and shoot some actors doing pretty much the same thing what the basketball players in my drawing are doing.

Dermatograph Sketch of a Man in Shadows

I love drawing people in shadows.

It makes an otherwise bland or average looking face look mysterious and therefore more interesting.

This is definitely the case in this drawing.

The original reference for this guy was very well lit. So well lit that there were virtually no shadows anywhere which made it very boring for me. I added some...well, a lot of shadows.

My Webcomics!

The idea was to update each webcomic site at a rate of at least once a week.

The next thing I knew I was updating them on a daily basis rapidly depleting the stock of pages I have built up. It’s no fun after all going to a webcomic site and finding only 2-3 comics uploaded.

I got each webcomic title equipped with a navigation bar for an easier reading experience.

Speaking of webcomics, I wish Blogger would come up with a webcomic template just like WordPress has. Maybe one of these days the people from Google would surprise us online webcomic creators and whip one up.

Dermatograph Sketch of a Woman's Profile

I had a bit of a hard time drawing this back then.

When drawing women, the trick is not to put in too much details but knowing how much details to leave out of the actual drawing or sketch.

That was the particular dilemma that I was facing when working on this piece.

Honestly it didn't really turn out as nice as I wanted it to but at least the figure is recognizable as a woman...or at least that's what I'd like to tell myself.

Dermatograph Sketch of a Runaway Child

I referenced this from a print ad I saw on an old magazine which had a missing child featured on the back of a milk carton.

I forget what the ad was about but the expression of the kid stayed with me even after all this time.

I used a dermatograph pencil, of course and did the sketch in 15 to 20 minutes trying to capture her expression and the emotion conveyed in the ad rather than trying to be as accurate as possible to the original photograph.

I used the back of a short copy paper which had something printed on the front. I was recycling...that and I didn't have money back then for some decent board papers.

I think I referenced an old Robert Mitchum black and white photograph for this one. I found it in some random movie magazine in my stash which had a feature on old classic movies.

The Prince and the Pee

How many times have women complained that us men keep peeing on the toilet seat and that why, for the love of God, can't we aim properly? They don't understand the reasons why and frankly how can you explain it properly to them without sounding like a total idiot?

Dermatograph Sketch of a Black Man

I once used dermatograph pencils to sketch back when I was in college (which was a loooong time ago).

For those wondering what a dermatograph is, it's also known as China Marker

"The pencil pole is made out of paper. It does not need to be sharpened. It can be torn by the rope in the pencil. These are the kind of pencils that are wrapped in paper and have the string that you pull and then unwrap the paper to "sharpen" them. The Non-Toxic Dermatograph Pencil can be used on China, glass, metal, cloth, cellophane, CD, vinyl and many other surfaces."

I had a few interesting results and a lot of fun experimenting with dermatographs.

This sketch of a black man is one of my best pieces using this type of pencil.

After the last three drawings that I posted (which are admittedly dark and by dark I don't necessarily mean they had a lot of shadows...which they do but you get my point), I decided to upload something a bit more lighthearted.

This was just something I drew from the top of my head one slow day.

As you may have guessed, when it comes to machinery and high tech stuff, my design sense tends to lean more on retro steam punk types of visuals rather than high tech science fiction-y materials.

Erap Resign

This drawing was commissioned for a sticker to be circulated during the height of EDSA Dos which unseated Joseph Estrada as the President of the Republic of the Philippines (and allowed Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to assume power).

Didn't make it to the printers however because Erap was quicker to the draw.

I used pen and ink (combination of technical pens and brush and ink) and colored pencils to pull this one off.

Offering

Another photo-referenced illustration, this time of a may with his hands cupped together and upraised as if in a ritual offering something to a deity.

This was a relatively easy piece to draw since it's mostly in shadows with most of the details in the face. Most of the work was done figuring out shadow placement and deciding how much detail to leave on the figure and how much to plunge into shadow. It was a very enjoyable exercise for since I love illustrating stuff that has lots of shadows.

I find it very mysterious.

I used a Staedtler Mars Lumograph HB pencil and the sketch took me a scant 10 minutes to do.

Thugs

I know it's not exactly the image that would pop into your head when you hear the word "thug" but back in the 17th century this is exactly how they look like.

Thugs were an "Indian network of secret fraternities engaged in murdering and robbing travellers, operating from at least the 17th century (and possibly as early as 13th century) to the 19th century".

Yoga

This is an old piece I referenced from a photograph in an occult book.

It's already a few year old but unlike some of my other drawings, which I grow to hate after looking at it with new eyes after some time has passed, I am pretty much satisfied with how this one has turned out considering it's just a quick sketch really.

I used a Staedtler Mars Lumograph HB pencil and the sketch took me roughly 20-30 minutes to accomplish.
